2020 BMW X5
In a world where BMW’s range takes in every X-number from 1 to 7, the X5 barely raises a remark. Why wouldn’t Munich (well, Spartanburg) build a new version of its big smart crossover? Yet in its day the X5 was a revolution. Just before the last century ended, the original X5 became the first ever ‘off-roader’ that behaved like a car on the road.
Following the 2020 introduction of the performance-oriented M50i, which offers a 523-horsepower twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, the engine lineup now has a plug-in hybrid option. The new-for-2020, all-wheel-drive-only xDrive 45e replaces the 50i and is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine (same as in the 40i models) paired with an electric motor that delivers a combined 389 horsepower. The onboard 24 kilowatt-hour battery pack gives the X5 30 miles of all-electric range. In addition to the three powertrains, the X5’s slope-roofed counterpart, the X6, helps cast a wider net for buyers who prefer sportier looks.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe
The full-size Chevrolet Tahoe is a completely new beast for 2020, bigger inside and out, with more interior room for passengers and cargo. There’s also a new independent rear suspension, which gives the truck-based SUV a smoother ride. The new suspension also helped give third-row passengers 10 additional inches of legroom and added 10 extra cubic feet of storage space behind the third row.
The powertrain lineup still comprises the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter and 420 horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engines and offers a new third option: a 3.0-liter six-cylinder Duramax turbo-diesel that matches the larger V8’s 460 pound-feet of torque and gets 24 mpg in city and highway driving combined. Based on testing, it also should easily top 30 mpg on the highway, well above the EPA’s 26 mpg rating. The new Tahoe gets a standard 10-inch touchscreen and a slew of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, a following distance indicator and automatic headlamps.
2020 Chrysler Pacifica
Here at Car and Driver, we are huge fans of minivans: they are great at hauling people and stuff, get good fuel economy, and in most cases are better than crossovers and SUVs in accomplishing their missions. At the top of the minivan heap is the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica, which excelled in much of our testing and is competitive with its rivals in other tests. With standard second- and third-row stowable seats, one of our favorite infotainment systems, and an optional hybrid powertrain, the Pacifica is the best minivan you can buy.
The lineup also includes a plug-in hybrid (called Pacifica Hybrid, not to be confused with a conventional hybrid) that uses a modified version of the 287-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine found on the gas version. The hybrid delivers a slightly reduced 260 horsepower but has a 3,650-pound tow rating, 32 miles of all-electric range and a traveling distance of 500 miles with all power sources topped off.
2020 Genesis GV80
Fledgling luxury carmaker Genesis has proven that it is quite capable of challenging European and Japanese luxury brands and now it’s getting into the premium SUV game with the 2020 GV80. The GV80 takes on the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-class. Genesis’s first SUV is powered by a standard turbocharged four-cylinder or a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine; rear-wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive will be optional. We’ve sampled both engines and have conducted an instrumented test on both the V-6 and the four-cylinder; we can report that the new SUV delivers both agile handling and a serene ride.
This mid-size luxury crossover shares the same all-new underpinnings as the upcoming next-gen G80 sedan and is available with rear- or all-wheel drive. The engine choices start with a 300-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder and escalate to a 375-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6, the latter of which delivered a brisk 5.3-second zero-to-60-mph time at our test track.
2020 Hyundai Palisade
Although the 2020 Palisade shares a platform with the Kia Telluride, the Hyundai’s distinct styling cleverly carves out its own niche. That allows it to appeal to a different subset of the SUV-buying public while offering much of what we like about the Telluride, including a smooth-running powertrain, spacious cabin, and composed on-road demeanor. The Palisade takes a more upscale approach, with its top trims offering almost Genesis-like levels of comfort and refinement, which helped it earn an Editors’ Choice award. list. It also offers a segment-leading 18 cubic-feet behind the third row. For 2020, Hyundai added a top-end Calligraphy trim that includes exclusive exterior lighting, 20-inch wheels, a unique grille design and a Nappa leather interior.
